Walking Through a Client-Present Euthanasia: Before, During, and After

Presented by Rebecca McComas, DVM and Kristi Lehman, MSW, LISW

Are you finding that some of the most difficult appointments at your clinic are euthanasia appointments? Do these experiences sometimes leave you feeling drained and that you weren’t able to support the client as much as you might have wanted? If so, join us for this session where we’ll “walk through” the euthanasia experience together from start to finish, as much as we can from the point of view of our clients.  Though we must acknowledge that COVID has changed the way we are doing many things, including euthanasia, we'll take time to celebrate the many things that your clinic is already doing to support clients during this difficult time.  And we'll share some ideas we've picked up along the way that may help improve processes at your clinic to support your clients even better, especially as you are able to welcome clients back inside.

Date: Thursday, October 29, 2020
Time: 12:00pm - 1:00pm

Language of Loss: Communication tools for supporting grieving families with children

Presented by: Rebecca McComas, DVM and Kristi Lehman, MSW, LISW

When it comes to kids, the words we use to talk about death matters. Language can make the difference between fear and safety, trust and mistrust, distress and resilience. For most children, the loss of a pet is the first time they’ve thought about death or conceptualized loss, and they look to adults for answers and support. While our tendency is often to soften and shield, we’ll review the evidence that supports using direct, honest words to help children cope with the loss of their pet. This talk will include concrete tips for building strong language habits when working with families and children, and will focus on language around hospice, caregiving, euthanasia, and body care.
Date: Thursday, December 3, 2020
Time: 12:00pm - 1:00pm
