Ah, the month of LOVE! There is SO much to celebrate in the short little month of February. Buckle up - let’s get creative!

 February

Kick off the month with a preventative reminder! Last month on the 1st we were all too busy with New Years' wishes and resolutions. It’s time to get those reminders going because prevention is a year-round effort.

If you see exotics, be sure to feature your favorite hedgie patients on February 2nd! This could take a little planning as they aren’t the most common pet, so be sure to gather those photos now! If you don’t see exotics, have fun celebrating Groundhog Day! A great idea for this holiday would be a photo of a staff member or pet outside either with or without a shadow - it’s all up to old Punxsutawney Phil, but it’s ALWAYS 6 more weeks of winter here in Minnesota! Get creative, I’m sure there are some rodent teeth and ears you can add to the photo in post-production!

Everyone’s favorite goofball breed is celebrated on February 3rd! It’s Golden Retriever Day and the perfect opportunity to highlight all those golden treasures you see in your Facebook and Instagram stories! February 3rd is a twofer because it’s also National Doggy Date Night! Encourage your followers to make a date with their pooch for a special dinner, relaxing belly rub, stroll through the park, or a movie marathon cuddle session on the couch!

Valentine’s Day is on a Monday this year, which means you get to shower patients with love! There are tons of cute ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day on social media, but my favorite idea would be to post pets at their appointments in stories (with all of the cute heart stickers and love songs you can muster!) AND make a Facebook post asking pet parents to share their sweet furry Valentine in the comments!

Valentine’s Day can be all cute and fun, but February 14th is also Pet Theft Awareness Day. Have you noticed an uptick in the number of desperate pleas for help surrounding stolen pets on social media? According to multiple news outlets, pet thefts are on the rise. In fact, it is estimated that about two million domestic animals were stolen in the U.S. in 2021 and less than 10% were reunited with their families. My suggestion for bringing some light to pet theft? Blog about it. You can explore local statistics and offer tips for pet owners on how not to become one of those statistics. Another great idea for pet theft awareness? Make a video!

It’s like a second Valentine’s Day just for pets! National Love Your Pet Day is on February 20th and because we heart stickered and love songed ourselves out on Valentine’s Day, I think it’s the perfect opportunity to dig into some of the science behind the human-animal bond!

No one, and I mean NO ONE, appreciates a Dog Biscuit quite like our canine companions. Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day is on February 23rd, and a good time to ask your followers- just which biscuit makes all of their dog’s snack dreams CRUMB true? If you’re feeling adventurous, create a poll-style graphic using different reactions to correspond with different types of popular biscuits! (RIP to the poll feature that was removed from business pages in 2021, thanks a lot, Zuckerberg!)

There are quite a few Monthly observances in February! I would suggest focusing on:

  • Pet Dental Health Month
  • National Cat Health Month
  • Spay and Neuter Awareness Month

Check Out These Tips:

Make an informative post about all three. Consider making a video or going live to highlight the ones that you really want to dive deep into. If you can, run a special on cat appointments, dental appointments, or spays/neuters to highlight on social media. If you can’t offer discounts, maybe a small giveaway for any pet parent that makes an appointment for one of these services is in order. Last, but certainly not least, be sure to capture photos and videos of cat appointments, dental exams/cleanings (before and after shots of dental cleanings always get the message across!), and spays/neuters for stories and post shares - just remember, not TOO gory! You’ll scare away the normal folk!

Preventative Reminder

This old adage will always ring true! The cost of preventative medicines can sometimes be daunting to customersbut the cost of treatment (both financially and physically) is way more consuming.

Pet Cancer Awareness Month

The word cancer evokes a lot of feelings— but the one that we as veterinary professionals want to hold on to is HOPE. If you have treated a pet with cancer recently, reach out to their family to inquire about sharing their story— like how they were diagnosed, the method of treatment, and most importantlyhow the pet is thriving now with their new lease on life. Need some additional ideas? Make a video of your veterinarian explaining treatment options offered at the clinic, or specialists you work with.

PRO TIP: Conduct a Facebook Live with a cancer specialist that your clinic works with or discussing common types of cancer in pets and how they are treated.

Post Suggestion: The signs and symptoms of cancer can be missed easily without routine vet care. Part of our wellness exam is documenting and tracking any changes to your pet’s overall wellness, making early detection possible. #PetCancerAwareness #PetCancerTreatment

To be perfectly honest, I cried crocodile tears typing this sweet poem by M.J. Berry into this graphic! Anyone who knows the love of a rescue will truly be touched as well by this sweet work of art. Celebrate National Rescue Dog Day with this amazing tribute to the angels that are rescues.

Post Suggestion: Today we celebrate the underdogs, the dogs who needed a little extra love, and the ones that understand the value of the bond you share with them. Happy National Rescue Dog Day <3 #RescueDog #NationalRescueDogDay

Memorial Day (May 30):

Don’t forget to remind clients if you will be closed or have adjusted hours for the Memorial Day holiday! Providing the name and phone number for your local emergency clinic is also helpful should an emergency arise.

Laura's Social Snippet

Have you noticed anything #Different about our suggestions this month?! That’s right, all the hashtags! Recent changes to the Facebook and Instagram algorithm have made the importance of hashtags skyrocket. Utilizing hashtags is an easy way to help people find your content and help it get exposed to more eyes. Here are some things to keep in mind when using hashtags:social snippet
  • Check out best-hastags.com for suggested hashtags to use regarding the subject of the post you are making.
  • Less is actually better with hashtags. Pick 1-3 relevant and popular tags to use in your post.
  • Location hashtags are helpful to help people in your area find you.
  • Super popular hashtags like #MotivationMonday are a great way to draw in new visitors.
  • Don’t fuss with trying to put your hashtags in the body of your text, just drop them at the end, it's cleaner and helps followers understand your message better.
  • It’s okay if your hashtags are bringing likes and comments from people outside of your service area- it will help your posts get shown to people who could be potential clients and help followers see more of your posts!

If you have any questions about hashtags, feel free to #ReachOut!

Preventative Reminder:

Now more than ever, it is important that clients are not forgetting those essential monthly preventatives. This adorable reminder will help get them on the right track for the month. If you have an online pharmacy, don’t forget to provide a link to make shopping easy and convenient!

Post Suggestion: Happy April! Don’t forget to give your pet their monthly preventative today!

Heartworm Awareness Month:

We know the realities of treating heartworms—the process is long, arduous, and expensive. Bringing awareness to how heartworms are contracted and how they can be prevented is a great way to kick off the month of April. If you have an online pharmacy, be sure to link it in the post to give your clients an easy path to ordering preventatives.

Another great feature to help bring awareness this month is through storytelling. If you have a client who has given permission, write a short overview about a case you have treated, schedule a Facebook Live event to tell the story/give more information on heartworms, or put together a photo album to tell a visual story.

Post Suggestion: There are no April fools here because heartworms are no joke! Heartworms are transmitted through infected mosquitoes and once your pet is heartworm positive, the treatment is long, hard on you and your pet, and expensive. The good news is that you can keep your pet protected with monthly preventatives! Mosquitos will be back and buzzing before you know it, so give us a call today if your need your pet’s monthly preventative prescription renewed or refilled!

April 1-7: Pooper Scooper Week

What goes in must come out! Pooper Scooper Week is a great reminder that picking up pet poop is part of responsible pet ownership, and this duo of graphics will help you get the point across. Use them together or space them out during Pooper Scooper Week!

Post Suggestion: Happy Pooper Scooper Week! Picking up your pet’s poop not only keeps green spaces looking fresh, but it is also essential to keeping the community at large healthy!

April 11: National Pet Day

Engage your clients by celebrating all pets today! If you treat exotics, this post is sure to get some cool photos.

Post Suggestion: Happy National Pet Day! It doesn’t matter if your pets are furry or feathery, scaley or slimy, we want to see them!

April 30: National Adopt A Shelter Pet Day

Give your followers a gentle reminder that shelter pets make fantastic companions. If you offer any sort of special discounts or promotions for recently adopted pets, now is a great time to bring that up!

blog

Need some blog-spiration? Here are some ideas to kickstart your creative writing streak!

Lost and Found: It is commonplace for found pets to be brought into our clinics and checked for a microchip, so if you have a story about a lost and found pet that ends with a happy reunited family, see if they will allow you to tell their story! You can touch on the importance of microchipping and give some insight into how it works. Give your readers more incentive to visit the clinic by offering a small discount on microchipping services if they mention your blog!

World Veterinary Day is celebrated yearly on April 24. Celebrate this special day by giving a short excerpt from each professional in your clinic about why they chose veterinary medicine and what they love most about it! This is a great way to help your readers learn more about the people that they trust to administer care to their beloved pets and helps to give your team the recognition they deserve! This would be a great way to get started in video blogging (vlogging) and can be an entryway into making videos for social media!

Additional Tips:

social snippetLaura’s Social Snippet: Video is a great way to engage followers! Breaking up your usual posts with videos adds variety to your social media and can help folks digest bigger chunks of information. For free video editing, I recommend Blender available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. You can locate free tutorials for using Blender on YouTube, and before you know it you will be a video editing pro! Post Suggestion: It’s International Ear Care Day! Clean ears make for happy pets, so be sure you aren’t neglecting those adorable treat bag detectors 😊

March 9: Unique Names Day

Post Suggestion: Happy Unique Names Day! Does your pet have a unique name? Share a photo of them, their name, and how you decided on the name down below!

blog

Need some blog-spiration? Here are some ideas to kickstart your creative writing streak!

Spring Safety: A change in the seasons means that there are new safety alerts your clients need to be aware of. Some spring safety tips you can elaborate on are spring garden dangers, spring cleaning products, car safety, and bites, stings, and allergies.

Poison! March is Poison Safety Month, and it is important to touch on topics like common poisons in the home, signs, and symptoms of poisoning, the poison safety hotline number, and what to do in case of a poison emergency.

Hiking, Biking, and Camping: Outdoor Safety for Pets! Spring means more outdoor time! If your clientele tends to be the outdoorsy type, craft a blog about safety measures they can take if they are bringing their pet along for their outdoor adventures! Include a reminder to keep pets without a strong recall leashed even on the most deserted hiking paths, avoid contact with wild animals, and microchip just in case. Make it even more personal by including a list of pet-friendly local destinations for outdoor activities!

Preparing for Flea, Mosquito, and Tick Season: While we are aware that flea, tick, and heartworm prevention are measures that should be taken all year round, a lot of people choose to stop monthly preventatives during the cold months. Gearing up for warmer weather and the onslaught of the creepy crawlies is a good reminder that preventatives are important and now is the time to get on track with preventatives before an infestation can occur.

Ear Care: Problems and Solutions! Talk about the common ear issues your clinic sees and how to prevent or treat them in honor of International Ear Care Day on the 3rd. Ear cleaning is an important part of pet care, so provide your followers some bonus material by filming a short video on how to clean dog and cat ears!

Ah, September! Time to get ready for cooler weather, crunchy leaves, and back to school in whatever capacity that might be this year. September is recognized as two significant monthly observances. The chances are that the majority of your clients will have a reason to pay close attention to one or the other. September is not only Responsible Dog Ownership Month, but also Happy Healthy Cat Month. These two observances provide an excellent opportunity to speak directly to your feline and canine clients about how they can help their companions live their best lives!Click Here3

Below are additional suggested social media posts for veterinary clinics this month. To use the posts on your page, copy and paste the text into your post. Complimentary graphics are included in the zip file to the right.

September: Monthly Preventative Reminder

Remind your clients that it is time to give their monthly flea, tick, and heartworm medications on September 1!

Post Example: Happy September! It’s time to give your pet their monthly preventative! If you are running low on supplies or need a new prescription, give us a call today!

September: Responsible Dog Ownership Month

Having a dog takes a lot of dedication, time, and is truly a life-changing experience. Dog owners must know exactly what they are getting into when they decide to add a canine companion to their family. Created by the American Kennel Club, Responsible Dog Ownership Month is a way to bring awareness to what we all must do as dog owners to ensure a happy, enriching, and wonderful life for our dogs. This is a great opportunity to share the core values of being a responsible owner with your clients. Take extra time this month to periodically remind owners what responsible dog ownership means. You may consider including tips like making sure your dog is leashed when out and about, microchipped and tagged, brought in for regular wellness exams, vaccinated, provided with quality food, allowed to exercise their brains, nose, and bodies, etc.

Post Example: September is Responsible Dog Ownership Month! Dogs require a lot of dedication, love, and attention. As dog owners, it is our obligation to make sure that our companions lead fulfilling and enriched lives by following a standard of care for our loyal canines. This includes the basics like regular vet care, shelter, food and clean water, exercise, safety, and play. Add a little love into the mix, and you can guarantee that your dog is living their best life!

September: Happy Healthy Cat Month

Much like Responsible Dog Ownership Month, Happy Healthy Cat Month was established to bring attention to the things that we as cat owners can do to ensure a quality life for our feline friends. Often seen as independent creatures, cats require a lot more time and effort that we generally give them. There are countless people out in the world that think that cat ownership is basically boiled down to food, water, and somewhere to sleep - but cats require so much more than that to live a full life.

Post Example: September is Happy Healthy Cat Month! Our feline friends deserve to live their lives to the fullest! Besides the basics of food, water, and shelter, providing cats with mental and physical stimulation through toys and play, regular and consistent vet care, and love and affection are all ways to ensure a happy and healthy cat!

September 3: International Day of Charity

If there is one thing that we can all rally behind during these turbulent times, its that giving back to those in need is important. On this International Day of Charity, consider uniting your followers to help a local animal shelter, rescue, or other good cause! Consider starting a fundraiser on Facebook, linking directly to a donation page for the cause of your choice, or simply encouraging followers to do something good like dropping off a bag of food, treats, towels, blankets, or toys at the local shelter. Don’t forget to do your part too!

Post Example: Today is the International Day of Charity. It is time to reflect on what we can do to help those in need. If you are able and feel inclined, local animal shelters and rescues are always in need of unopened dry and canned dog and cat food, treats, towels, blankets, and toys!

September 7: Labor Day

Labor Day was established to celebrate the social and economic achievements of the American worker. Here is to you, veterinary workforce! Be sure to remind clients of any office closures and what to do in case of an emergency.

Post Example: Happy Labor Day! As a reminder, we will be closed today in observance of the holiday. Our office will resume regularly scheduled hours on Tuesday, September 8. Have a safe and healthy holiday!

September 11: Patriot Day

A somber and heartfelt reminder on Patriot Day speaks volumes to remembering those who lost their lives on September 11 and those who stepped up to help in America’s time of need.

Post Example: Today, we honor the lives that were lost on September 11, 2001, and extend our sincerest gratitude to all of the women, men, and rescue dogs that risked their lives to save those in need.

September 22: First Day of Fall

Happy Fall! The official change in the season is a great time to make sure that your clients know that preventative care is a year-round plan!

Post Example: Happy First Day of Fall! Just because the season is changing doesn’t mean your preventative care plan should! Fleas, ticks, and mosquitos are still out and about wreaking havoc, and your pet’s monthly preventative is needed to keep them safe and protected. If you need a new prescription or a refill, give us a call today!

September 28: World Rabies Day

Rabies. It’s scary, it’s deadly, and it’s 100% preventable with a rabies vaccine. World Rabies Day was established to bring awareness about rabies and the steps we can take to prevent it. Although not extremely common in our area, exposure to rabies-infected wildlife - the majority of which are bats and skunks - is still possible, and vaccinating our pets not only protects them but our human families as well. Remind your followers that rabies vaccines are not optional.

Post Example: Rabies is a fatal virus that is most commonly found in skunks and bats in Minnesota. Up-to-date rabies vaccinations are the only way to keep your pet and family safe from this deadly disease. If your pet is due for a round of rabies vaccine, give us a call today to schedule an appointment.

Fall is in full swing! Welcome to the season of pumpkin spice everything, gorgeous foliage, football, and crisp and cool weather. There are plenty of things to celClick Here3ebrate this month and fantastic opportunities to engage with your followers!

October: Adopt A Dog Month

One silver lining we can take from this global pandemic is the fact that pet adoptions and volunteer foster-parents have skyrocketed since February. People working from home, coupled with the pleas of local shelters and rescues for help during this time, has led to widespread reports of clear shelters. However, there are still plenty of pets still looking for homes! Consider featuring adoptable dogs from a local rescue or shelter on your page this month and mention any discounts or specials that you run for newly adopted pets!

Suggested Post: October is Adopt a Dog Month! Can you imagine snuggling up with a pup while it snows this December? What about sharing a bite of Thanksgiving turkey with a truly thankful new friend? If you have been considering adding a new dog to your family, this month is the perfect time to do so! Adoptions have been on the rise since the beginning of the pandemic, but there are plenty of pooches out there looking for loving homes!

October 1-7: National Walk Your Dog Week

Encourage your followers to get out and enjoy the ability to take a nice long stroll with their pup (or leash trained cat!) before the bitter cold and snow sets in! National Take Your Dog Week is a great reminder to pet owners that walks are not just good for the body, but the mind and soul as well!

Suggested Post: Happy National Walk Your Dog Week! Daily walks are not just essential for the physical wellbeing of our pets, but also positively affect their mental health and the bond that they share with you as their owner! This week, consider adding an extra walk to your routine, making your walk slightly longer, or change up your route to keep things exciting and new! Where is your pet's favorite place to walk?

October 2: World Smile Day

A smile just brightens everyone's day! Engage your clients on social media by asking for photos on a happy World Smile Day post.

Suggested Post: There is nothing sweeter than a smile! Let's see your smiley canines and felines in the comments below!

October 9: Pet Obesity Day

As veterinary professionals, we see overweight and obese patients every day. We fully understand the ramifications of poor diet and exercise on pets, but sometimes owners do not truly understand why a couple of extra pounds here and there is not ideal. Pet Obesity Awareness Day is a great opportunity to remind your followers that even our pets must battle the bulge.

Suggested Post: While we often find ourselves giggling at portly pooches and chunky cats on the internet, but the truth is that even a couple pounds of extra weight can cause health issues in our pets. Five extra pounds of body weight might seem to be a silly thing to worry about - but in a small pet, it could be the equivalent of carrying around an extra 50 pounds! Pet Obesity Awareness Day is the perfect time to assess your pet's body condition to see if a diet and added exercise routine might be in order. If you are having trouble with the battle of the bulge in your pet, give us a call today to schedule your next appointment!

October 17: National Fetch Day

Like we need an excuse to play a good round of fetch!

Suggested Post: Happy National Fetch Day! Whether you play indoors or outdoors, with a canine or feline, today is a great day to spend a little extra time playing fetch!

Is your dog a little confused about the concept of fetch? You are not alone! Many dog owners are familiar with the game of throw the ball and chase the dog around while repeating "drop it!" like some sort of miracle mantra. Another common game you may know is where you throw the toy, and your dog watches you fetch it. While some dogs take to fetch easily, some need a little extra guidance! National Pet Cancer Awareness Month

Cancer. Just the word alone can cause a sense of dread and unease. Remind them that establishing regular wellness exams will help you as the veterinarian pick up on any changes, no matter how small!

Suggested Post: Our beloved pets are not immune when it comes to cancer. Pets get cancer at about the same rate as humans, and like cancer in people, the cause of cancers in pets is not fully known. Older pets are more likely to develop cancer, and regular veterinary exams can help with early detection. November is Pet Cancer Awareness month and a great reminder that establishing regular wellness exams with us will help us pick up on any abnormalities should they arise.

Keeping up with regular veterinary exams can help establish a good healthy baseline for your pet and help point us in the right direction if something changes.
