Pumpkin Spice and Everything Post-Worthy: October Social Media for Vets

October brings a shift in energy on social media, clients start checking their feeds for costume inspiration, pumpkin content, and anything that feels a little festive. It’s a good month to mix that seasonal fun in with the everyday things your clinic already talks about, wellness, prevention, the people and pets who make up your practice.

Below is a day-by-day and theme-by-theme breakdown of ideas you can use to fill your calendar with content all October long!

October 1: Monthly Preventative Reminder

Parasite prevention doesn’t take a break just because the weather cools down. Fleas, ticks, and other pests are still very much around in October, and a simple reminder now can save your clients a headache (and their pets some discomfort) later. Wrap it in some fall imagery and keep the message light: prevention is still on, sweater weather or not.

October 2: World Smile Day

Ask your clients to share a photo of their pet’s happiest, goofiest smile. While you’re at it, this is a good moment to slip in a mention of dental health, since those smiles depend on more than just a good mood. A little humor, a little education, an easy post.

October 10: World Mental Health Day

This one’s for the people behind the scenes too. Veterinary work is rewarding, but it’s also heavy more often than people outside the field realize. NOMV (nomv.org) has resources worth passing along to your team, and if anyone’s in crisis, 988 is there day or night.

On the client-facing side, this is a good day to talk about how much pets do for our mental health, easing loneliness, lowering stress, making hard days a little more bearable. Ask your followers to share how their pets show up for them. These posts tend to bring out some genuinely moving stories.

October 14: Pet Obesity Awareness Day

A round pet is easy to laugh at online, but extra weight comes with real risks. Use this day to talk through what a healthy body condition actually looks like, some low-key ways to keep pets active, and why the extra pounds matter more than people think. A before-and-after from a real patient, if you have one, makes this hit home. It’s also a low-pressure way to invite clients who are worried about their own pet’s weight to reach out.

October 15: National Pug Day

No real strategy needed here, just let the pugs do the talking. Post your pug patients, ask followers to post theirs, and let the comments fill up with snorts and wrinkles.

October 16: Boss’s Day and Feral Cat Day

Two very different holidays land on the same day this year. Boss’s Day is a nice excuse to introduce your leadership team with a few fun facts or a behind-the-scenes photo, it’s a small thing that makes a clinic feel less like a building and more like people.

It’s also Feral Cat Day, worth a post explaining the difference between stray and feral cats, how to safely help feral colonies, and the role they play in natural rodent control, especially in rural areas.

October 24: Pit Bull Awareness Day

Pit bull owners tend to be some of the loudest, proudest pet parents out there, so give them a reason to show up in your comments. Celebrate the breed and let their people brag a little.

October 26: National Pumpkin Day

Pumpkin spice might be a human thing, but plain canned pumpkin has real benefits for pets, especially for digestion. Talk through safe portions, when it’s actually helpful, and when to skip it. A festive photo doesn’t hurt either.

October 29: National Cat Day

Let the cats have their moment. Share fun facts, feature any clinic or staff cats, and invite followers to post their own. It’s also a good excuse to remind clients that indoor cats still need regular checkups, even if they never set a paw outside.

October 31: Halloween

Costumes, costumes, costumes. Get your team involved, invite clients to share photos of their dressed-up pets, and consider turning it into a costume contest or slideshow. It’s an easy way to end the month with some high-engagement fun.

Themes to Weave In All Month

A few broader observances worth working into your content mix throughout October:

October 18โ€“21: Veterinary Technician Week

This is the week to make sure your techs know they’re seen. Spotlight their skills, share a few fun facts, or ask them for their best pet care tips. Clients genuinely love getting a glimpse of the people behind their pet’s care.

For more ideas, NAVTA’s Vet Tech Week hub is a solid resource: https://navta.net/national-veterinary-technician-week/

And of course, VHA is celebrating right alongside you. We’ll be announcing winners for our Nominate a Vet Tech contest throughout the week, so if there’s a tech at your clinic who deserves some recognition, nominate them here: https://forms.gle/9VBCH2zXmedxdybF6

Adopt a Dog Month โ€“ Team up with a local shelter or rescue and use your platform to feature dogs who are ready for a home. It doesn’t take much, one post has real potential to connect a dog with the right family.

National Pet Wellness Month โ€“ A good excuse to cover the fundamentals: wellness visits, nutrition, dental care, weight management, and yes, mental health too. These are the things that quietly add up to a longer, healthier life for pets.

Black Cat Awareness Month โ€“ Black cats still get passed over more often than they should, thanks to some stubborn old myths. Use this month to challenge that a little, whether through fun facts, black cat features, or simply giving them some extra spotlight.

That’s a full month of ideas: educational posts, a couple of heartfelt ones, some easy engagement bait, and a few genuine laughs along the way. Mix them with the stuff that always performs, like adorable patients, tricky cases your team pulled off, and staff spotlights, and you’ve got a feed that actually reflects your clinic instead of feeling like a chore to maintain.
